When You Want the Best Sales Team

If you really want to be a competitive company, you have to hire the best people to do the things that you cannot, or those that can do what you do better. Even if your skills at management or sales are adequate, surrounding yourself with talent can be nothing but beneficial to the company. The problem is that hiring the best people is a competition as every person in the industry wants the same thing. Even hiring people with ‘potential’ is a difficult task for hiring managers who want to train the best (or at least better).

A good sales team is integral to the success of a company because every kind of business involves getting people to purchase something or other. The least you can do, as a business owner concerned with the future of the company, is make sure you have a solid sales team in your corner.

If you are unsure what exactly constitutes a good salesman, there are people who can help you come up with a hiring profile. Creating this profile helps you and your hiring managers determine exactly what kind of salesperson you will need for your particular business. Your job advertisements, interview processes and such should help you narrow down the field and get you the people that fit your profile.

Apart from job advertisements, it’s also a great idea to ask family, friends, and colleagues whether they have recommendations. This is a suggestion that works better for small businesses, though people who are in the bigger businesses can benefit as well.

What are the characteristics of the best or better salespeople? The first is that they are really, really into making money. They are curious and are determined to perfect their techniques for the fastest most satisfying results. They have an astoundingly large capacity for bullshit. The ability to sell snow to people who live in igloos is not achieved with straightforward or blunt communication skills. They are able to market anything from free grammar check solutions to Japanese-Chinese food combos to large-size accessory bags.

Try and find people who treat the company money and products as their own. The people who say, if this were my product, how would I go about getting it sold? If this were my money, would I be doing this with it? The people who do so can be the most loyal of your employees.

It is, admittedly, difficult to find people with a certain level of dedication to sales, but there is no doubt that they are out there; whether already polished gems or diamonds in the rough. It’s harder, according to some, to hire people for sales positions because the best salespeople have some inherent talent at the job. But sales, probably more than any other job in the industry, requires talents that cannot be learned in a classroom. That does not mean great salespeople can be trained, however.
